Abingdon, VA is in rural southeastern Virginia only 20 minutes from the Tennessee border. When we started looking for housing we quickly realized our options were limited. It was even harder for us to find a place that allowed dogs. So, I asked Kelsey why don't we live in an RV now instead of later when we retire. Her first gut reaction was NO! but after I explained my reasoning behind it she warmed up to the idea.
Here are just a few reasons why living in a 5th-wheel works for us:
- We had extremely few options for housing and what we did have was pricey in our opinions
- When you buy a trailer, it's considered your home - so the interest you pay is tax deductible
- We are paying rent to ourselves instead of to someone else
- Our land rent is only $140 a month
- I hated having all our mix-matched belongings from college - this helped us to sell them
- It helps us realize what is most important to keep and encourages us to live a minimalist lifestyle
- Forces us to watch less T.V. and try to get outside more
- Plan to keep the 5th wheel after school so we can have an awesome camping trailer
- Try to keep costs as low as possible to help keep the student loans to a minimum
- Knowing there was an end to living in the 5th-wheel (more for Kelsey)
- Kelsey could also refurnish our home to her liking when we were done with school
This is why we decided to live in a 5th-wheel while I went to school. Not all of these reasons were a reality, but it was what started our adventure. It may not be the typical approach to living, but it is what works for us.
